About the Department of German
General Information
Centennial Tongji, brilliant German. Tongji University has been engaged in the teaching of German for more than a hundred years, and the Department of German has become the Chinese center of research on German language and literature, German teaching, as well as the window for exchanges with Germany. The university was set up by research on German. The major was founded in 1907 along with the subject of medicine, when the German Medical School opened. Revolutionary youths of that time including Yin Fu, Chen Yuanda, Wang Shunfang all received education here. Leading figures like translator Feng Zhi, philosopher Chen Quan, Germanic scholar Zhang William, German scholar Liao Fujun have taught here.
Listed among the first batch of national first-class undergraduate majors classified by the Ministry of Education, the German major at Tongji University is a state-level characteristic discipline with two national excellent courses. “The Evaluation Report of Chinese Universities and Disciplines (2017-2018)”, jointly developed by authoritative institutions such as Research Center for Chinese Science Evaluation, evaluates the competitiveness of Chinese universities and disciplines among which German major of Tongji University ranks the first in China.
Our abundant faculty members all have studied, done further research or worked in Germany. In addition, institutions like German Academic Center (DAAD) have sent several resident experts from Germany to our department. Professors of German Department serves as members of German Sub-committee of College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education and the head of German Group of College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee. Our teachers, textbooks and teaching achievements have been highly recognized by the educational communities, and several teachers have been rated as the top ten outstanding figures in foreign language circle of Shanghai. At the same time, the Department of German has also been awarded the title of the National Women's Model of Labour Day, Shanghai March Eighth Red Flag Collective Unit and Women's Civilization Post of Shanghai Educational System.

About Our Programs
Undergraduate Program -The German Major
1. Required Courses and Electives: Comprehensive German, Modern German, Basic Training of German Language, German Reading and Listening, Introduction to German Media, Specific Topics on Germany, Introduction to German Linguistics, Practical German (about Science and Technology, Business and Economy), German Literary History, Literature and Philosophy, German Speech and Debate, etc.
2. Practical courses: Oral German, German Reading, German-Chinese Translation, German-Chinese Interpretation, Thesis Writing in German, etc.
Postgraduate Study
Students joining our department may explore German language and literature further through our postgraduate degree programs — Master of German Language and Literature, Master of German Translation and Interpreting (MTI) and PhD studies concentrating on German Language and Literature.
In addition to the course arrangement, students are also encouraged to study with us through our WeChat Official Account, and participate into German language competitions, college communities and German newspapers. With professional expertise and comprehensive quality, our students actively engage in interdisciplinary research. About the Department of English
General Information
Founded nearly 30 years ago, the English Department at Tongji University is equipped with abundant faculty, reasonable subject arrangement and sound training system. It has now established comprehensive training levels offering degrees from bachelor to doctor including both academic degree and professional degree. It’s entitled to grant master and doctoral degrees in foreign language and literature and professional master's degree in translation, and it has set up a postdoctoral research center.
According to the “Evaluation Report of Chinese Universities and Disciplines”, the English major of Tongji University was rated as a 5-star major (top level). Our training program is highly appraised by the Teaching Steering Committee of Foreign Language and Literature Major of the Ministry of Education. The achievements of ideological and political education in professional courses and teaching reform has been reported and affirmed by authoritative media including CCTV News Broadcast, Liberation Daily, Xinmin Evening News.

Main Courses: Introduction to British and American Literature, Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Translation, Chinese Civilization, Western Civilization, Multicultural Communication, Leadership and Decision-making, Multiculturalism and Global Governance, China's Foreign Discourse Construction, Comparison of Chinese and Western Thinking, Language Innovation, Media Literacy, Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning.
Our department is equipped with personalized classrooms for small-class teaching. For students of the English major, we have set up a curriculum system that combines courses on basic skills, disciplinary knowledge and general education, aiming to lay a solid theoretical foundation for students and cultivate their practical ability, critical thinking and international horizons. We have organized various activities and competitions for students to improve their language and comprehensive abilities. Our students have won many awards in the “21st Century Cup” National College English Speaking Contest and the national cross-cultural ability competition for college students, and various other competitions. The excellent rate and the passing rate of TEM-4 and TEM-8 rank high among universities in China.

About the Department of Japanese
General Information
The Japanese major of Tongji University started in 1993 and has formed a professional training system with complete degree levels including bachelor, master and doctor. We have excellent faculty members graduated from elite universities like Peking University, Shanghai International Studies University, Tokyo University, Waseda University, Kyushu University, Hokkaido University, Okayama University. 90% of our professional teachers have doctoral degrees or above, and 3 Japanese experts are employed all year round. The department head also serves as a member of the Japanese Sub-committee of College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, the Vice President of Chinese Japanese Teaching Research Association and the President of Shanghai Branch. Young teachers have made outstanding achievements in national teaching competitions, winning the runner-up prize of the Japanese group in the final of the multilingual Teaching Star competition of FLTRP, and the first prize in the final of the CASIO Cup Teaching Basic Skills Competition for young teachers of Japanese major in China, etc.

Our department is equipped with personalized classrooms for small-class teaching. To nurture our students into high-level talents with compound Japanese abilities, we encourage students to study minor courses such as finance, law, journalism or pursue a second major starting from the second year according to their interests. At the same time, students are also encouraged to apply their knowledge to practice through various activities such as Japanese speech and debate competitions, talent competitions, thesis writing competitions, cultural lectures and so on. After years of efforts, our department has set up a series of featured activities such as international seminars on Japanese education and Japanese studies, Homestay in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture and Japanese college associations.

1. The department has set up exchange programs with many renowned Japanese universities such as Osaka University. Students are provided with opportunities and convenience to study abroad.
2. The department cooperates with many Japanese organizations. Over ten students are sent to experience the home-stay in Japan together with teachers.
3. The close collaborations with such companies as Pasona offer students opportunities of practical training in Japanese working environment. Three to four graduates are selected every year to work in Japan, enjoying the same salary and benefits as local staff do.
