Nowadays, the Japanese major of Tongji University has been approved as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site by the Ministry of Education in 2021, thus opening a new chapter for the three majors of German, English and Japanese in the School of Foreign Languages Tongji University to be approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites.
Since its establishment in 1993, the Department of Japanese Language and Literature of Tongji University has been developing steadily. In 2000, it was granted the authority to confer master’s degrees in Japanese Language and Literature, and in 2006, it was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2011, it was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, and in 2015, it launched double bachelor’s degrees programs jointly with globally renowned Japanese universities to form a system of talent education from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees and from academic to professional degrees, which exerts an influence on Japanese teaching and research in China.
The School of Foreign Languages Tongji University focuses on the quality of discipline development by cultivating multilingual talents underpinned by the goal of fostering virtue through education, emphasizing the characteristic education targeted at interdisciplinary competence and international vision, making efforts to develop students' solid basic language skills and the interdisciplinary competence of foreign language + X in light of the actual demands of society and the conditions of the majors themselves, and empowering students to absorb nutrients from excellent Chinese traditional culture based on their global visions, so as to equip them with the ambition to revitalize our nation and serve as the important bridge for exchanges between China and the outside world in the new era.
